This message is being sent out to all subscribers on the JAIR mailing list. It contains a brief status report and a "Call For Papers". Since June 15, when JAIR began accepting submissions, we have received over 35 papers. Although the submission rate has (happily) exceeded our expectations, we have been able to review almost all of the submissions within 6 weeks, thanks to our editorial board and outside reviewers. In the coming months, we will have several excellent papers appearing. JAIR's acceptance rate is currently well under 25 percent, but as the rate and quality of submissions stabilizes, I expect that it will end up close to 25 percent. JAIR is now available via Gopher. The gopher server is at p.gp.cs.cmu.edu (port 70). The server can also be reached through other gopher servers, including the original gopher server at UMN under "Other Gopher and Information Servers" (see North America, USA, Pennsylvania). The JAIR gopher server also enables you to access JAIR via World Wide Web, e.g., through the UMN gopher server. Soon there will be other routes available as well, such as through the CICnet electronic journal collection. I hope that you are pleased with the journal, and I welcome any suggestions you might have. I encourage anyone engaged in AI research to consider submitting an article to JAIR. In particular, I'd like to encourage submissions in the areas of natural language, robotics and perception, since we have received relatively few papers in these areas. As the "Call for Papers" (below) explains, JAIR welcomes submissions in all areas of AI and related fields. CALL FOR PAPERS JAIR is a refereed publication, covering all areas of AI, that is distributed over the internet. In addition, each complete volume of JAIR will be bound and published by Morgan Kaufmann. JAIR offers AI researchers several advantages over existing journals: -- To promote rapid publication of research results, articles sent to JAIR will be reviewed and returned to the authors in approximately 6 weeks. Electronic publication will occur immediately after the editor receives the final version of an accepted article. -- Articles are distributed free of charge over the internet via ftp, automated email, and a newsgroup. -- Subscribers will be able to take full advantage of the electronic medium. JAIR will support a variety of electronic services, such as online appendices containing data/code. JAIR will only publish articles of the highest quality. Submissions will be evaluated on their originality and significance. All claims should be clearly articulated and justified either empirically or theoretically. Papers should describe work that has both practical and theoretical significance. We encourage authors to be concise. Short, high-quality articles will be welcomed, in addition to the longer articles that traditionally appear in AI journals. JAIR will also publish technical notes -- very brief papers that extend or evaluate previous work. We invite submissions in all areas of AI, including automated reasoning, cognitive modeling, knowledge representation, learning, natural language, perception, and robotics. (For more information, see the file "submission-info", available from any JAIR distribution site. For general information about JAIR, see the help file available via anonymous FTP from p.gp.cs.cmu.edu in the directory /usr/jair/pub.)
