Return-Path: <@ptolemy-ethernet.arc.nasa.gov:minton@ptolemy.arc.nasa.gov> Date: Fri, 25 Jun 93 14:03:46 PDT From: Steve Minton To: jair-editorial-board@ptolemy.arc.nasa.gov Subject: JAIR newsgroups Dear Editorial Board members, Below you will find the "Call for Votes" for the JAIR newsgroups that Matt Ginsberg put together. The powers-that-be in the USENET world insisted that we should hold off on the separate "discussion newsgroup" until it is clearly warranted, so we will wait a couple of months before launching that newsgroup. The "Call for Votes" explains how to cast your vote for the JAIR newsgroups. (The establishment of the newsgroups is contingent on getting enough "yes" votes, so please vote!) In other news, we are doing quite well in terms of the papers that have been submitted to JAIR so far. And, thanks to those of you who have already served as reviewers, we are successfully meeting our commitment in getting papers back to authors in approximately 5 weeks. I'll be sending you a more detailed progress report and production schedule within the next month. Regards, - Steve CALL FOR VOTES COMP.AI.JAIR.ANNOUNCE COMP.AI.JAIR.PAPERS PLEASE READ THIS ENTIRE MESSAGE BEFORE YOU VOTE. VOTES CAST INCORRECTLY WILL NOT BE COUNTED! NEWSGROUP DESCRIPTIONS: ======================= The purpose of the proposed groups is to facilitate the distribution of the new Journal of AI Research. PROPOSED NAMES and STATUS comp.ai.jair.announce moderated comp.ai.jair.papers moderated The moderator will in all cases be the executive editor of the journal, jair-ed@ptolemy.arc.nasa.gov. BACKGROUND and PURPOSE The announcement of the new journal and a preliminary call for papers follows at the end of this message. A list of editorial board members is also included. The description of the individual proposed groups is as follows: comp.ai.jair.announce Announcements and abstracts. This group will primarily be used to announce the publication of new papers; when a paper has been accepted to the journal, the abstract will be posted here. comp.ai.jair.papers Accepted papers: postscript, LaTeX or other source suitable for text search, supporting code or other data that would not normally be included in articles due to size limitations. Discussion of issues arising out of accepted papers will presumably take place on comp.ai. SUMMARY OF DISCUSSION: ===================== The proposed groups are the result of discussions surrounding the original RFD. One significant issue arising there was that many sites might not want to receive the papers themselves (ftp and e-mail servers are also available), and by splitting the two groups, it will be possible for these sites to receive abstracts and other announcements only. The traffic on comp.ai.jair.papers can be expected to be approximately 1Mbyte/week. HOW TO VOTE: =========== In order to vote, send a message to ginsberg@t.stanford.edu [36.8.0.123]. The subject line of the message must be "vote" but is not case-sensitive. The body of the message must be a sequence of lines, each line of the form newsgroup: vote where newsgroup is comp.ai.jair.announce or comp.ai.jair.papers and vote is either Y (yes) or N (no). You may wish to edit the following template and use it as your response: ---------- cut here ---------- comp.ai.jair.announce: Y/N comp.ai.jair.papers: Y/N ---------- cut here ---------- You may abstain on either group by not including a line regarding it. You must include your real name and e-mail address in your vote. Anonymous votes are not permitted. You can change your vote by mailing a new vote with a subject line of "changed vote" to ginsberg@t.stanford.edu. Please do not post your vote to the net, or vote by replying to this message. Your vote will not go to the right place and will not be counted. Proxy votes and forwarded votes are not permitted, and each person may only vote once (however many addresses they have). Please make sure your votes are in the above format. Votes in other formats will not be counted. Votes will not be acknowledged over e-mail. Rather, mass acknowledgements of votes received will be posted from time to time. These acknowledgements will list only addresses and names, and will not indicate how people voted. No indication as to how the vote is going will be posted or released in any way. For a newsgroup to pass, there must be 100 more "Yes" votes than "No" votes, and at least 2/3rds of all votes must be "Yes" votes. After the voting period has ended, the votes will be tallied and the results will be posted to news.announce.newgroups and other appropriate newsgroups. Along with the results, a list of all voters along with the way each person voted will be posted to the net. There will then be a 5 day waiting period during which the results can be inspected and verified. A file containing everyone's original vote will be available upon request via e-mail. After the waiting period, the moderator of news.announce.newgroups may send out control messages creating/deleting groups according to how the votes go. Thanks for participating! The announcement of the new journal follows.
